VDOT Accepts Fancy Gap Central System Software for Fancy Gap Visibility Detection System
Fancy Gap, VA -- VDOT officially accepted the Central System
software component of the Fancy Gap Visibility Detection System (VDS).
The Central System software, developed by Open Roads Consulting,
was accepted for operational use after undergoing complete functional
acceptance testing by VDOT. The Fancy Gap VDS consists of 14
WeatherScene™ weather detection stations developed by Systems
Innovations Inc (SII), mounted at various locations along I-77.
The Central System software allows VDOT to access the weather data
gathered from these weather stations.
The Central System is
currently installed and being operated from the VDOT I-81
Interim Operations Centers located at the Smart Road facility
of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).
VTTI operators are now able to utilize the Central System
software to monitor weather conditions in the Fancy Gap area.
When adverse weather conditions are present, operators are alerted
to the condition by audible alarm and a popup window on the user
interface. Operators can then decide whether to post a warning
message to motorists on Dynamic Message Signs.
The Fancy Gap VDS Central System software is based on the OpenTMS™
system that is operating in the Richmond Smart Traffic Center (STC).
VDOT chose to use this system as the basis for the Fancy Gap system
due to its successful deployment in Richmond, and the ability to
reuse proven software components. The Fancy Gap VDS system
incorporates the existing OpenDMS™ subsystem for controlling message
signs, and adds the OpenESS™ subsystem for communication with the
weather stations. This strategy allowed for rapid deployment of the
system, which was accomplished in 1 year from notice-to-proceed to
Central System acceptance.
