ADMS Virginia Now Available for Northern Virginia Stakeholders
CHESAPEAKE, VA --
Open Roads Consulting, Inc. announces the fourth release of Archived Data Management System (ADMS) Virginia. Access to data from the Hampton Roads region has been readily accessible for over a year now -- with this release, ADMS is expanded to support the Northern Virginia region.
ADMS is unique in that its functionality was shaped by inputs from stakeholders within the deployed regions. Prior to ADMS Virginia, traffic data was available at the Smart Travel Lab (STL), but not readily available to the stakeholders that needed the data. The ADMS project has allowed the STL to expand their dataset and has made a significant impact by delivering easy, web-based access to archived Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) data and analytical tools that support transportation activities such as:
- Planning for operations and maintenance
- Incident management
- Performance measurement
- Simulation support
- Environmental analysis
- Special event planning
ADMS offers a user friendly interface with many options to tailor the data to users needs. Selections are available by map, lists, and standard web page form elements. Data output is available in Comma Separated Variable (CSV), Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), Extensible Markup Language (XML), map and chart format. CSV and XML formatted data can be imported into spreadsheet or other applications for further analysis. Downloading of raw data is one of the most popular services among users.
To make early impacts of the system tangible to users, the project team used a phased "build" approach. Using this approach, the core functionality was deployed one year prior to the original delivery date. This approach was very successful, leading to on-time and under-budget deployment.
The success of ADMS has been made possible through an innovative public/private/academic partnership, leading-edge research to support advanced ADMS functions, utilization of emerging industry and ITS standards, and careful attention to best practices in systems and software engineering.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sponsored ADMS up through the deployment for Northern Virginia via a Federal Grant awarded to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). In addition to Open Roads, the other project partners working with VDOT include the University of Virginia Center for Transportation Studies and George Mason University.
In the future, we will see ADMS expanding its functionality and incorporating additional regions throughout the state of Virginia. The next release, already in progress, is scheduled for deployment in mid 2005. These efforts are being sponsored by VDOT.
Open Roads Consulting was responsible for the web-based and Geographical Information System-based (GIS-based) software development of ADMS. Open Roads open architecture and modular design allowed the team to progressively increase functionality and expand to new regions without redesign or recoding required. Open Roads provides integrated software and system solutions for our clients. The corporate focus of Open Roads is directed toward the Intelligent Transportation and Security industries. Whether developing systems that enhance safety, enhance system efficiency, streamline maintenance or protect critical assets, Open Roads provides the right solution at the right cost. Open Roads staff has decades of experience in the design and deployment of systems.
University of Virginia Center for Transportation Studies and the Research Council maintains the data repository for ADMS. The research team has developed advanced data screening algorithms, data replacement (imputation) algorithms, and data characterization techniques to ensure available data is of the highest value to users.
George Mason University worked in developing the requirements for the transportation and air quality support service.
