VDOT Goes Statewide with VSP CAD Traffic Information Distribution

Richmond, VA -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) selected Open Roads Consulting Inc. (Open Roads) to utilize their OpenTMS Data Gateway to provide Virginia State Police (VSP) Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) transportation-related information on a statewide basis. Open Roads will be demonstrating the statewide OpenTMS Data Gateway at the ITS America 2006 Annual Meeting & Exposition, May 7-9 in Philadelphia, PA, Booth 744.

David Sutton, VDOT Central Office ITS Project Manager states: "One of the critical needs of traffic operations is to discover incidents quickly. The operators receiving real-time CAD data have significantly improved their ability to detect and respond to incidents. This enables the incident to be cleared sooner, traveler information is provided quicker, and traffic gets moving again faster."

The OpenTMS Data Gateway distributes transportation-related information to all the regional Smart Traffic Centers (STCs), the 511 Virginia Clearinghouse, the Transportation Emergency Operations Center, and local 911 dispatch centers. The information is shared based on "publish & subscribe" architecture. Configurable filters allow the customization of what data is distributed or published. Likewise, each entity can customize what data they receive or subscribe. This capability has significantly increased situation awareness allowing the operators to see and track a significantly greater number of incidents than were previously tracked by relying on the VSP scanner and phone calls from VSP dispatchers.
