Operators are able to monitor numerous weather and road conditions
to support traffic management in the project area, which is along
a 31-mile section of I-77 near the intersection of I-81 in Southwest
Virginia. This area, generally known as Fancy Gap, is prone to weather
conditions such as heavy fog, which makes driving hazardous.
Automatic Warnings
Using input from visibility sensors, the central computer determines
if the visibility in the coverage area is adequate for safe travel.
When visibility drops below a predetermined level, the system notifies authorized
personnel of the situation, and recommends a message to be placed on
VMS signs in the affected area.
Operators are also able to monitor weather and traffic conditions in
real-time by viewing video from cameras mounted on the weather stations.
