North/West Passage Traveler Information Integration

The Project

The North/West Passage encompasses eight states along I-90/I-94 between Minnesota and Washington and was formed in 2003 to foster coordination and cross-border collaboration for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Within the corridor, there are numerous systems for collecting, processing, and integrating traveler and road work information. A major goal of the North/West Passage is to influence ongoing standards development and utilize effective methods for sharing, coordinating, and integrating traveler information across state borders.

The Challenge

The North/West Passage developed and launched a high-level traveler information web site for the corridor (www.i90i94travelinfo.com) and established guidance that establishes consistent descriptions of major events.  Building upon previous successes, the North/West Passage sought a partner who could seamlessly integrate roadway event data being collected by state agencies and design a second generation web site capable of providing corridor-wide event information.

The Approach

Leveraging Open Roads’ Data Gateway middleware solution, Open Roads partnered with LogicTree, a leading provider of Traveler Information IVR solutions in North America.  Together, the team was able to offer a cost-effective, solution to meet North/West Passage immediate needs for sharing event data across the corridor, and providing a scalable, flexible architecture to support their longer-term goals for normalizing corridor-wide data, expanding the web site capabilities, and supporting center-to-center data exchange.

The Solution

Based upon the Open Roads and LogicTree scalable 511 ITS Architecture, the team was able to quickly provide an integrated solution that spans across all eight member states.
