OpenTMS Enterprise Deployment and Maintenance

Open Roads has supported the Richmond/Tri-cities Transportation Operations Center since 1999. Open Roads has valuable experience conducting lifecycle software development and deployment, maintaining software and hardware, system administration, training, and participating in Configuration Control Board processes. In 2003, Open Roads was selected by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as the Prime Contractor in the TOC expansion, including deployment of the ATMS and integration of new ITS field devices and regional systems.

OpenTMS Deployment and Integration

Open Roads designed and developed the integration of the state police CAD System with the Richmond ATMS. This integration platform evolved to the VDOT Statewide Data Gateway, which is currently used to share real-time information between all the VDOT transportation management centers, first responders, the VDOT 511 traveler information system, the Transportation Emergency Operations Center, and other stakeholders. This platform provides a highly scalable system that supports all the ITS standards including IEEE 1512, TMDD, and CAP.

Rapid Deployment

A key project goal was to deploy the ATMS as soon as possible, allowing VDOT employees to manage traffic during the 18-month reconstruction of the James River Bridge on I-95. This was successfully accomplished with a phased development, integration and deployment approach. Open architecture development and incremental delivery of the system allowed VDOT to deploy the critical functionality, while development continued on those functional areas less important to their immediate needs.

ATMS and TOC Maintenance

Open Roads has provided eleven years of maintenance and support to the Richmond TOC, including configuration management, system maintenance, ITS field device and communication upgrades, all with 24x7 on-call support.
